Glamping

Glamping NZ: the best spots

Most of us are now familiar with the term ‘glamping’ – glamorous camping. Basically, if you love the charm of camping but don’t love the endless bugs and deflated blow up beds, glamping could be your ideal getaway. Just like hotels, there’s glamping accommodation to suit everyone. Basic glamping is available for those just seeking a proper bed and toilet, or you can go 5-star luxury complete with gourmet catering and designer furniture. Here are some of our favourite glamping NZ spots:

Castaways coastal tent, Karioitahi Beach (1hr from Auckland)

This secluded spot overlooking the beach doesn’t have phone reception or wi-fi. But it surely has everything else you could ever need or want. An outdoor bath sits within the trees, the fridge is stocked with gourmet food (and wine). You also have access to e-bikes and golf buggy for off-road adventures. If you’re there to treat yo-self, you can take up the package including couples massage at the spa, restaurant meals and multiple tents.

Kissing Gate, Mapua (30min from Nelson)

You’ll find Kissing Gate in the Mapua district, just 30 mins from both Nelson and Abel Tasman Park. Here you’ll find a charming glamping spot, perfectly located for exploring this incredible pocket of the South Island. The accommodation itself is slightly rustic and definitely retro, but more than comfortable with a full kitchen, outdoor fireplace bath on the edge of the pond. You can get as active as you like – with the Mapua coastal walk and famous cycle trails nearby. Check out glow-worms from the nearby walkway, visit the rivers at Rabbit Island or travel an hour to the famous Golden Bay.

Wharerangi Forest Camp, Waitakere Ranges (50min from Auckland)

Going bush has a different meaning when having a weekend at this glamping destination. Just 50 mins from central Auckland but feels a world away in the Waitakere Ranges. Two luxury guest cottages and two renovated caravans sleep up to 10 people, making it perfect for group getaways. You’ll be happy to stick around and unwind, with a large camp kitchen, living and dining area, a deck with panoramic views. Take a short bush walk to the nearby glade to chill out on the swing bench and admire nature, or sit amongst the stars in the spa.

Fallow Hills, Masterton (2hr from Wellington)

A safari style tent and two renovated huts give you the best of both worlds – sleep in a queen bed in a glamorous tent while enjoying the luxuries of a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. Step outside to enjoy a covered outdoor dining area and not one, but two, outdoor baths. Nearby Masterton was voted New Zealand’s most beautiful city in 2017. Or you can drive 45 minutes to some great beaches or wine village of Martinborough.

Birch Hill, Hawkes Bay

Three luxury tents and a generous, renovated hut sitting on an expansive sunny lawn make Birch Hill the perfect escape for families or groups. Even dogs and horses are welcome, meaning no family members need to miss out. There’s no shortage of outdoor space – with a 1300 hectare farm to explore by foot or bike. Kids can explore the nearby gully while parents relax on the deck. There’s also classic board games, petanque, outdoor darts and swing-ball. Or if you’re in the mood for some action, book a 4WD buggy tour of the farm.
